The quest of a junior photographer (wannabee)
I really don’t love photography until there’s photo contest during our Science Week when I’m still in high school. As far as I can remember, I was still on the junior years at that time. It was organized, of course, the science department. Then there was a sudden urge at my side to join the contest, hmmm, actually you really don’t have to join the contest for it was compulsory. ;p
The theme of the contest was about the different phases of the environment. To find the cleanest and ewww areas of the city. So I then borrowed my aunts camera, it was then a NIKON camera and it uses film. I then go to the streets of the city with a friend to consult if it’s the best or worst shot ever made. Hoping to find a nice place inside the city, I hurriedly go to Plaza Independencia, one of the preserved spot in the city for it was one of the oldest spot downtown. Snap a few shots then journeying again to find the yucky, smelly and oh so disgusting part of downtown. It was then that I remember walking with my mom from a small mall and passing by a sewer with all those waste from the mall beside it. Again I walk to that place which is around 500 meters from Plaza Independencia. It was tiring but when I arrive at the place I feel anxious taking photos of that site. And my journey for that day was not yet done because the submission of entries will be done on that same day, and it was around 1pm I finish taking photos and I still have to develop the film and that will take around 1 hour or so. After few hours of waiting, I took a cab on the way to my school. When I arrive it was now around quarter to four, the deadline of all the entries.
It was a tiring yet enjoying day, but still kept thinking of what will happen to my photos. Will it end up on the facultys’ boxes or be exhibited on the schools main lobby. It was a saturday so I have to wait until monday.
And monday came, when I woke up I don’t think of getting a shower but still thinking about where my photos will end up. I arrive at school thirty minutes before the time, there’s no exhibit yet. After three hours of classroom activities, break came. I hurriedly ran to the ramps and go directly to the main lobby hoping to find my photos. I searched through the wooden frames for 5 minutes and there, i said to myself, that’s my photos. Smiling as if it was reaching my ear. Though there is no cash price for the winners, but fame is at hand. The price is the experience and the fun of doing things you dont actually do.
Now, I’m induling myself into digital photography, not using those crabby old film cameras. I still need to practice shooting using my gear because I’m still not familiar with all the functions of it. For those who want to check out my gear, visit it here. It’s the review of my gear, though it’s not yet the best cam in my hand but the shots were okay compared to those cheap old film cameras.
